The Indonesian Palm Oil Association — Gabungan Pengusaha Kelapa Sawit Indonesia (GAPKI) — was founded on 27 February 1981 as the national representative body for palm oil growers. Today, GAPKI's 741 member companies collectively manage approximately 3.7 million hectares of oil palm plantations, accounting for more than 30% of Indonesia's total plantation area.

As the industry's principal advocate, GAPKI works across policy, sustainability, and research to advance responsible growth. Sustainability lies at the core of its mission, pursued through mandatory ISPO (Indonesian Sustainable Palm Oil) certification, capacity-building programmes for independent smallholders, and active engagement with international buyers, NGOs, and regulatory bodies to meet the expectations of an evolving global market.

GAPKI also plays a central strategic role in global economic diplomacy, securing market access and countering negative campaigns through partnerships with major buyers. Domestically, it drives sustainability, supports smallholders, and fosters innovation via collaborative research consortia on mechanisation and pest control. Furthermore, GAPKI champions downstream industrialisation to boost economic resilience while protecting the livelihoods of millions of workers, positioning itself as the primary bridge between industry, government, and the international community.

Looking ahead, GAPKI focuses on strengthening Indonesia's position as the world's leading sustainable palm oil producer while expanding downstream industries. Through innovation and collaboration, GAPKI continues to balance economic growth with environmental responsibility in the palm oil sector.
